119th AES CONVENTION HISTORICAL EVENTS PAY HOMAGE TO AUDIO INNOVATORS “Fingerprint” Studios, Landmark Concerts & The Father of FMNEW YORK: 119th AES Convention Historical Events Chair, Harry Hirsch, has developed a riveting series of programs and events that include: recounting the history of sound reinforcement; recreating a live audio drama and celebrating FM Radio’s 70th birthday. Set for Oct. 7-10 in NY’s Javits Center, the Convention will host 400+ exhibitors and anticipates 20,000 attendees. “Harry Hirsch is a pro audio pioneer in the truest sense of the word,” says AES Executive Director Roger Furness. “His association with such seminal studios as Media Sound and SoundMixers and his early championship of CD and DVD replication services mark him as a genuine visionary. This is the first time Harry has served on an AES Convention Committee. We are delighted to have the benefit of his experience and boundless enthusiasm.”Scheduled events include: Friday, October 76:00PM -7:00PM: Audio Drama -Himan Brown, a broadcast legend and producer of such classic radio programs as “Inner Sanctum,” “Dick Tracey,” and “The Adventures of the Thin Man,” will recreate a live audio drama on stage at The Javits Center. One of the most influentialproducers in radio history, Himan Brown is a member of the Radio Hall of Fame, recipient of The American Broadcast Pioneer Award and the prestigious Peabody Award. He has produced more than 30,000 shows over a span of 70 years and still believes that “nothing visual can touch audio.”Saturday, October 89:00AM -12:00PM: Recording Studios Past, Present, Future - Harry Hirsch will moderate a panel of engineers, designers, and producers in a discussion covering significant changes in the audio industry over the past two decades and crystal balling what lies ahead. Panelists include Michael Barbiero, producer/engineer/remixer (Guns n Roses - Appetite For Destruction, Mick Jagger, Whitney Houston), Robbie Norris (Quad Sound, NYC), Dave Malekpour (Professional AudioDesign)and John Storyk, Walter Storyk Design Group (Electric Lady – Jazz At Lincoln Center).Sunday, October 9 1:30PM – 4:30PM: History of the Grand Recording Studios of New York City - Record producer/studio owner, Elliot Mazer (Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt), will moderate this panel based on Dave Simons’ recent book Studio Stories, How the Great New York Records Were Made (Backbeat), commemorating fabled recording facilities including Columbia’s 30th St., A&R, Fine Recording, MediaSound and Bell Sound. Prominent players including analog doyen Walter Sear (Fine Recording, Sear Sound), Brooks Arthur (Mira Sound, A&R), Bob “Red” Eberenz (Fine Recording), Don Puluse (Columbia Studios 30th Street, B&E Studio) Frank Laico (Columbia 30th Street), Jim Reeves (Columbia Studios, Record Plant), Ed Stasium (MediaSound, Power Station) and Harry Hirsch (MediaSound founder) will pay homage to the technological ingenuity that marked the early and middle years of recording, and share insights into the unique characteristics that gave these studios their “fingerprint”sounds. A book signing with the author and panelists will immediately follow the event.5:30PM – 7:30PM: Major Armstrong’s Contribution to Broadcasting, A panel organized by Scott Fybush (Radio World/Northeast Radio Watch) Steve Hemphill, (Solid Electronics Laboratories), Paul McLane (Radio World Editor-in-Chief, U.S.) and systems consultant David Bialik will recount the inspirational and tragic life of Major Armstrong. Inventor of FM radio, Armstrong spent his life trying to Enforce the patents on his creations. Participants include Charles E. Sackermann, Jr, owner/operator of the Alpine Tower Company, the world’s first FM tower and site of Armstrong’s first FM test.
